Data Useful for Class Projects:

  • Journal of Statistics Education:  Excellent resources for statistics courses. Their data archive contains datasets on a variety of subject areas that can be easily downloaded and opened. They provide excellent documentation on the data sets they have available.
  • Journal of the American Statistical Association:  Good resources for statisitcs courses. Contains data archives on a variety of subject areas, which will need some minor formatting to be useful. They provide some documentation of the datasets and a reference for the journal article associated with each.

General Social Science Data Resources:

  • Inter-university Consortium for Political and Social Research (ICPSR):  DSL staff encourages you to try this source first.  ICPSR is the largest and most often used resource for social science data.  Their data holdings cover a broad range of disciplines, including political science, sociology, demography, economics, history, education, gerontology, criminal justice, public health, foreign policy, and law. You will find it helpful to follow DSL's guide to using ICPSR.
  • The Government Information Sharing Project:  Lots of on line data extraction tools for REIS, USA counties etc.  Contains environmental, geographic, demography/census, economics and business, and crime and justice data.
  • UCSD Data Collection:  From their website, you can search UCSD data holdings or use UCSD's search engine for data available on the internet.
  • FedWorld:  From this site you can search for and order government and business information.
  • List of Federal information sources (Published by RAMS-FIE, a private organization):  Not actually a data source in itself, but provides a great deal of information on federal agencies.  From the RAMS-FIE site, you can search FEDIX, which provides information on federal agency research programs, contact information, educational programs and services, equipment grants, procurement notices, minority opportunities, etc.  You can also search MOLIS, which provides information on minority colleges and universities, such as institutional capabilities, student and faculty profiles, educational programs, research centers, etc.
  • Library of Congress Home Page:  At this site you can search the Library of Congress Catalogs.
  • Encyclopedia Britannica:  Subscribers can search Britannica's article database, some of which are not found in the print Britannica, Merriam-Webster's Collegiate Dictionary (Tenth Edition), the Britannica Book of the Year. They also have links to web sites selected by Britannica editors.
