How to Install ESRI Software on Your Home PC
Before installing ArcGIS, you will first need to decide what you intend to use the software for. If you require advanced editing capabilities and analysis, ArcInfo is the way to go. If you will only be using ArcGIS for minimal functions, you may only require the capabilities of ArcGIS. Information to help you make your decision is available here on ESRI’s site. If you are still unsure, we suggest using ArcInfo.
Additionally, if you are running Windows Vista, please know that ArcInfo and ArcGIS
must be updated to version 9.3 for Vista compatibility.

You will receive a licensing file from ESRI via email within 72 hours. In this email there will be an attachment with the name of: XXXXXXXXXXXX_v9.efl9. Save this file to your Desktop. Once you have saved it, please make sure that the file has the extension .efl9 - Check out the ArcGIS 9.3 ArcInfo Workstation CD’s (2 total) or the ArcGIS CD(s) from the Collaboration Center located at 175 McKenzie Hall, ground floor. You will have 24 hours to install and return the software.
- Insert the software CD into your CD-ROM. If you are installing a version of the software that has two (2) CD’s, install the CD labeled “continued” last. You will be presented with 3 options for installation when the disc spins up and launches the autorun esri.exe file found on the CD.
- You need to first install the License Manager before installing the actual software by clicking the “Install License Manger” button. This manages your software license and needs to be installed before installing the software; otherwise your software will not work correctly.
- Click the “Browse” button and browse to you where you saved your license file (.efl9) that you received from ESRI via email. Continue with the installation of the License Manager.
-
After installing the License Manager, you will need to install an update for it. To install the license manager update:
- Uninstall the existing ArcGIS License Manager and existing Sentinel System Driver/Sentinel Protection Installer from Add/Remove programs.
- Download and install the update, available here.
- Install the ArcGIS software.
-
After the install completes, you will need to inform ArcGIS that you are running your own License Manager. To do so:
- Open ArcGIS Desktop Administrator by clicking Start->All Programs->ESRI->ArcGIS->Desktop Administrator.
- There should be a computer icon that reads "ArcGIS Desktop (your computer's name)". Expand this item by clicking on the (+) to its left.
- There should be a folder named "License Manager"; click on this. Click the "Change" button. This will open a popup window requesting a License Manager.
- Type in your computer(s name here, then click OK. Click Apply and then OK on the "ArcGIS Desktop Administrator" window.
You should now be able to launch ArcGIS.
Basic Troubleshooting:
- Sometimes the License Manager does not start correctly. Open the All Programs->ArcGIS->License Manager (9.x)->ESRI License Manager Tools. On the "Service/License File" tab, click the "Configuration using Services" radio button, then click on the "Start/Stop/Reread" tab. Click the "Start Server" button, then click the "Server Diagnostics" tab. Click the "Perform Diagnostics" button, and review the output to see if there is an error (if so, it should show up in the first few lines).
Your licensing information is good for one year, and will need to be renewed.
You must be a student at the University of Oregon to obtain these licenses.
Please, remember having this software available for home use is a privilege,
not a right.
