UO SPSS for Windows Purchasers:

I have decided not to renew the network contract with SPSS for windows. The corporation that sells SPSS has consistently raised prices to exorbitant levels. The network license fee has increased by 10% per year for the last 4 years. The company clearly does not support higher ed and is not interested in that market. They are going after corporate customers that do data mining. When we started re-selling licenses we facilitated license purchases for about 10 faculty, This has grown to 85. Processing the payment for these licenses and distributing the software has been a real headache and I am happy to relinquish the faculty purchase part. I am easily able to do this because there is an alternative.

Thanks to another UO employee, we have discovered a great alternative. There is a way you can buy SPSS directly and it is about the same annual cost as what I could offer you if you bought on a site license from SSIL. It is not as restrictive as the license we formerly sold, and it allows you to have ALL the modules SPSS offers for an annual price of $250. There is not a restriction that you need to be on our network to access SPSS. If you are interested in this, go to
http://estore.e-academy.com/
click on software, SPSS 15 for faculty to get to the purchase area. I no longer need to be the middle person in this purchase.

We will take down our license server at the end of September, so if you do not want any interruption in use, you should consider buying SPSS from the e-store and installing before that date. This offers you as a user some grace period as the current license period ends on September 1, 2007. We have NOT processed any payments this year, so you should take whatever monies you have for SPSS and purchase through the e-store.

It's been a pleasure serving you, and I hope that you find this new option a good compromise,
Cathleen
